Avoid “Mulch Volcanoes”

Mulching can be one of the most beneficial things you can do for your plants.  Wood Mulch helps to maintain soil moisture, reduces evaporation rates, keeps soils warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer, inhibits weed growth and can improve soil fertility.

Mulching can also be installed improperly.  Proper mulching depths should be no more than 3 inches deep.   A ‘Mulch volcano’ is created when mulch is piled up on the trunk of a tree and should be avoided.  Many problems can arise from over mulching such as excessive moisture at the root zone, causing stress and root rot, stem tissue damage and disease.
